New to alcohol-free drinks? Welcome. You're in for a nice surprise. And possibly a mild identity crisis when you realise you can't tell the difference.

Here's where I'd start, whatever you normally drink. Consider me your sommelier. A sommelier who used to drink a lot of wine and now gets excited about fermented tea. Qualifications: questionable. Enthusiasm: off the charts.

If you drink lager

Below Brew Forgot To Take My Pils is a crisp keller pilsner with bright citrus over a clean, biscuity base. So drinkable you might forget it's alcohol free. 0.5%, 440ml can.

Fancy lighter? Athletic Upside Dawn is a clean golden ale at 45 calories, gluten free and vegan. The runners love it. Of course they do.

If you drink IPA

Cloudwater Fresh AF has the body and hop punch of a full-strength hazy IPA. Zesty orange, juicy peach, no watered-down sadness. A brilliant test of whether alcohol-free beer is for you. Spoiler: it is.

If you think bitter beer tastes like a hedge

Try vandeStreek Funhouse. Mango, pineapple, citrus and almost no bitterness. 46 calories a can.

If you drink red wine

Noughty's organic red is dealcoholised to under 0.5% so you keep the depth. Low in sugar, organic and vegan. Big glass. Let it breathe. Pretend you know what you're doing. I do.

If you like fizz

Pierre Zéro Sparkling Chardonnay is a full bottle of French fizz at a true 0.0%. Fruity, floral and brilliant with fish and chips. Posh enough for a party, cheap enough for a Tuesday.

If you drink G&T

Pearsons London Botanic is a 0.0% London Dry-style gin alternative. One part to three parts Mediterranean tonic, plenty of ice. Don't drink it neat. It's made for mixing, not for showing off.

The beginner's golden rule

Give it a full glass before you decide. Your taste buds have spent years hanging out with the real stuff. They need a minute to adjust. And serve everything properly cold, in a proper glass.

The deal bit

Not sure? Our bestsellers are what everyone else is buying. Mix any 6 and get 5% off. For everything else, head to our Dry January guide.

The serious bit

Every drink shows its exact ABV, and 0.0% means zero. If you drink heavily every day, speak to your GP before starting Dry January, because stopping suddenly can be dangerous.
