Kev's guide

Kev's guide to alcohol-free lager and pils

The pub swap is the easy one. Same glass, same stool, same bloke telling you about his new conservatory. Just a non-alcoholic lager in your hand instead. Nobody looks twice. They're too busy hearing about the conservatory.

Lager is also where alcohol-free brewing has quietly got very good. Crisp, cold, bit of bite. The everyday pint, minus the Thursday morning.

How to choose

  • Helles: the soft German one. Golden, gently sweet, biscuity, low bitterness. Easy all night.
  • Pils: drier, with more hop bite from classics like Saaz and Hallertau. The one for people who like their lager to answer back.
  • Light lager: lower calories, still tastes of something. Handy on a weeknight.
  • Something different: Mexican-style cerveza with lime, peach lager, or a radler (lager and lemonade, the shandy's posher cousin).

Lager has nowhere to hide. No big hops, no chocolate, no fruit. If it's thin, you'll know. These aren't.

Kev's picks

  • Athletic AF: a light lager with just 25 calories and no sugar, but it still tastes of beer. Witchcraft. (It isn't. It's brewing.)
  • Below Brew Forgot To Take My Pils: a hoppy keller pilsner. Old-school Saaz and Perle meet Hallertau Blanc and Mandarina Bavaria.
  • Brulo Highway to Helles: bright, golden helles with a dry little bite at the end. 56 calories a can, and a better name than most bands.
  • Fierce Beer 1983: a crisp golden lager toasting Aberdeen's famous 1983 season. Even if you're not from Aberdeen.
  • Wiper and True Tomorrow: twice-medalled from Bristol. Smooth, biscuity, 62 calories in a 440ml can.

Not sure where to start? The mixed lager bundle does the choosing for you. Swapping a few pints rather than all of them? Have a look at zebra striping. Balance looks different for everyone.

Good questions

What is the best non-alcoholic lager?

The one that tastes like your usual pint. If you drink German-style lager, try a helles like Below Brew Heaven & Helles. If you like more bite, go for a pils. Jump Ship Yardarm is still their bestseller five years on, which tells you something. Our best alcohol-free lagers guide goes through more.

What's the difference between helles and pilsner?

Both are pale German-style lagers. Helles is the softer one: gentle malt sweetness, biscuit notes, not much bitterness. Pilsner is drier and crisper, with more noble hop bite, often from Saaz or Hallertau. So helles is the one you sink on a sunny afternoon, and pils is the one that wakes your tongue up. We stock alcohol-free versions of both, side by side.

Is there a 0.0% lager?

Yes, a few. Krombacher Pils 0.0% is Germany's best-selling pils with no alcohol, Kaiserdom 0.0% is brewed in Bamberg, and Smashed 0.0% is a British lager with every bit of alcohol taken out. Most of our other lagers are 0.5% or under, and some are 0.3%. The exact ABV is on every drink, and the 0.0% only page lists the lot.

What is a radler?

A radler is beer mixed with lemonade. The German answer to a shandy, only nobody gets funny about ordering one. Nirvana Cloudy Lemon is their unfiltered Bavarian lager blended 50/50 with lemonade made from natural lemon juice, at 0.2%. Kaiserdom's lemon radler is 0.0% and uses wheat beer instead. Light, zesty and very good when the sun actually turns up.

Which alcohol-free lager has the fewest calories?

In our range, Athletic AF leads at 25 calories a can. Firebrand Little Wave is 31 calories in a 440ml can, and Black Isle Halo Organic Lager is 40. Brulo Highway to Helles comes in at 56. Calories are listed on each product page where the brewery provides them, so you can compare before you add to the basket.

What is zebra striping?

Zebra striping means alternating: one alcoholic drink, then one alcohol-free, and so on through the night. Lager is the easiest place to start because a good non-alcoholic lager looks and tastes like the pint next to it. No speeches, no announcements. It's not for everyone, and that's fine.
