Kev's guide

Kev's guide to alcohol-free rosé

If you're nervous about alcohol-free wine, start with pink. In my opinion, alcohol-free rosé is where the gap between with and without is smallest. It's served cold, it's all about fresh fruit, and nobody at a barbecue has ever swirled a rosé and asked about the terroir. Well, someone has. They weren't invited back. I got through plenty of wine before I cut down, then cut it out, and this is the colour I'd hand to a doubter first.

How to choose

Most of this collection sparkles, so decide on still or fizz first. For still non-alcoholic rosé wine there are three makers: Pierre Zéro from France, Noughty's Provençal-style organic rosé, and Balfour's Noble Alibi from Kent. Then pick your strength. 0.0% means no alcohol at all, and we show the exact ABV on every drink. Finally, size: 20cl for one glass, 75cl for the table. If bubbles are the whole point, the sparkling page has the lot.

Kev's picks

  • Pierre Zéro Rosé 20cl: one glass of French rosé at 0.0%, 18 calories per 100ml, nothing left over. Also in a 75cl bottle.
  • Noughty Organic Rosé: Provençal style, from South Africa's Western Cape. Organic and vegan, under 0.5%, with 2.8g of sugar per 100ml.
  • Balfour Noble Alibi: alcohol-free English rosé from Kent, made with Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Strawberry, raspberry and a hint of cream. (Yorkshire isn't making rosé yet. Don't tell Harrogate.)
  • Noughty Sparkling Rosé: the best seller on this page, and the fizzy exception. Organic Tempranillo at 0.0%, and BBC Good Food reckon it's the best in the world.

Pink goes nicely in a mixed case. Any 6 bottles of wine or spirits get 10% off, 12 get 15%, taken off automatically. Build a wine box, or come and try before you buy at the Otley Taproom, 7 Manor Square.

Good questions

Is there a 0.0% alcohol-free rosé?

Yes. Pierre Zéro Rosé is a still French rosé at 0.0%, in 20cl and 75cl. 0.0% means no alcohol at all. If you like bubbles, Pierre Zéro Sparkling Rosé, Noughty Sparkling Rosé and Wild Idol Sparkling Rosé are 0.0% too. In the UK, anything at 0.5% or under counts as alcohol free, and we show the exact ABV on every drink. Everything at 0.0% is in the zero range.

Is there an English alcohol-free rosé?

There is, and it's a good one. Balfour Noble Alibi is grown in Kent at Hush Heath Estate, from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, the same grapes behind England's best sparkling wines. It's a still rosé, delicate blush pink, with fresh strawberry, raspberry and a hint of cream, and it's vegan. Serve it chilled. Kent, showing Yorkshire how it's done. Just this once.

What is Provençal-style rosé?

It's the pale, delicate style of rosé people picture from the south of France: light pink, elegant, fresh rather than sweet. Noughty Organic Rosé is made in that style, in South Africa's Western Cape, rested on its lees for two months, then gently dealcoholised at low temperature to keep the colour and body. On the sparkling side, ZENO's rose-gold fizz is a Provençal-style rosé too.

What do you eat with alcohol-free rosé?

Barbecues, salads, and anything you'd eat in a garden while pretending it isn't about to rain. Still rosé works well with food. Noble Alibi is lovely with grilled chicken, salmon or a goat's cheese tart. Pierre Zéro Rosé suits a picnic, prawns or a mezze spread. Noughty's Provençal style is made for a long lunch with olives and bread.

Should I buy rosé in a 20cl, 37.5cl or 75cl bottle?

Depends how many glasses you're after. The 20cl Pierre Zéro Rosé is one generous glass, with nothing going to waste. Wild Idol's sparkling rosé comes in a 37.5cl half bottle, about right for two. The 75cl bottles are for sharing, and they count towards the wine deal: any 6 bottles of wine or spirits get 10% off, 12 get 15%, via build a wine box.
