Kev's guide

Kev's guide to alcohol-free fruit and sour beer

Fruit beer used to mean something luminous at the back of a student union fridge. Things have moved on. Good alcohol-free fruit beer now runs from a gentle peach lager to a salty, tropical gose, and the best are properly grown-up. A decent alcohol-free sour beer wakes your mouth up the way a sharp first sip should. If lager feels a bit samey and IPA's a bit much, start here.

How to choose

  • Gose. An old German style: wheat, a gentle sourness and a lick of salt. Brilliant with tropical fruit. For people who like things tart.
  • Fruit lagers and pale ales. Clean beer with fruit on top. The least sour and the easiest drinking. The gateway for anyone who says they don't do fruit beer.
  • Fruited IPAs. Hops plus fruit, sometimes plus chilli. For the adventurous.
  • Radlers. Beer meets lemonade. Light, a touch sweet and very refreshing.

0.0% means no alcohol at all. In the UK, anything at 0.5% or under counts as alcohol free. We show the exact ABV on every drink. Most of this range sits at 0.5% or under, and the Kaiserdom radler is 0.0%.

Good questions

What is a gose?

Gose (say it go-zuh) is an old German wheat beer style, traditionally brewed with salt and coriander. It's gently sour and slightly salty, a bit like the sea air on a sharp day at Whitby, which makes it very refreshing. Modern brewers love adding fruit to it. Our favourite alcohol-free gose is Brulo Five Fruit, made with mango, passionfruit, guava, apricot, orange and sea salt, at 0.5%.

What does alcohol-free sour beer taste like?

Tart, bright and mouth-watering. Think sour sweets, green apple or a squeeze of lime rather than vinegar. The sourness is usually balanced with fruit, so it reads as juicy rather than harsh. If you're new to it, start with a fruited gose, which is only gently sour, before working up to anything sharper. If you'd rather avoid sour altogether, a fruit lager like Peach Fuzz gives you the fruit without the tang.

How do brewers make beer sour?

Mostly with lactic acid bacteria, the same family of bugs that sour yoghurt. The brewer lets them work on the beer for a while, which brings the tang, then carries on brewing as normal. Some sours are aged with whole fruit, like Belgian kriek with cherries. It's a slow, fussy process, which is partly why good sours cost a bit more than a can of lager. Worth it, though.

What's the difference between a fruit beer and a sour beer?

A fruit beer is any beer with fruit added. It can be a crisp lager, a hazy IPA or a radler, and it doesn't have to be sour at all. A sour beer is defined by its tartness, and plenty of sours happen to use fruit too. So a peach pale ale is a fruit beer, a gose is a sour, and a fruited gose is both.

Which alcohol-free fruit beer has the fewest calories?

In this collection, Brulo Five Fruit Gose is lowest at 56 calories per 330ml can. Next is Mash Gang Journey Juice at 63 calories per 330ml can, then Fierce Beer Peach Fuzz at 75 per 440ml can. We list calories on every product page where the brewer gives them. For more, see our low-calorie beers ranked.
