Kev's guide to alcohol-free red wine
Good questions
Which alcohol-free red wines are 0.0%?
Pierre Zéro Merlot is our 0.0% red, in a 20cl or 75cl bottle. 0.0% means no alcohol at all. The others sit just above: Miris Blend Cabernet Sauvignon is under 0.4%, Noughty Organic Red is under 0.5% and ILEX is 0.5%. In the UK, anything at 0.5% or under counts as alcohol free, and we show the exact ABV on every drink. For 0.0% only, browse the zero range.
Should alcohol-free red wine be served chilled?
Not fridge cold, but not warm either. I'd give it about twenty minutes in the fridge before dinner, so it's a touch below room temperature. Without alcohol, a red can taste a bit soft and jammy when it's warm, and a light chill tightens it up. A fruity Merlot like Pierre Zéro takes a cooler serve happily. Bigger reds like ILEX or the Miris Blend Cabernet want a little less. Personal taste, mind.
What goes with alcohol-free red wine at Sunday dinner?
Roast beef, obviously. This is Yorkshire, and the pudding needs company. The Miris Blend Cabernet Sauvignon has the blackcurrant and dark plum to stand up to red meat and gravy. Merlot is softer, so try Pierre Zéro or ILEX with roast chicken, mushrooms, lasagne or a cheeseboard. Noughty Organic Red is a good all-rounder for a midweek bowl of pasta.
Can you get alcohol-free Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon?
Yes, both. For Merlot there's Pierre Zéro Merlot, a French 0.0% in 20cl or 75cl, and ILEX, a 100% Merlot from the 2023 vintage made in Saint-Émilion, at 0.5%. For Cabernet Sauvignon, try Miris Blend, under 0.4%, with ripe berries, blackcurrant and vanilla. Those are the two red grapes on the shelf right now.
Should I buy a 20cl or 75cl bottle of alcohol-free red?
The 20cl Pierre Zéro Merlot pours one generous glass. Ideal if you're the only one not drinking, or you fancy one glass with your tea and nothing left over. The 75cl is for sharing, or a dinner party where nobody needs to know. Both are 0.0% and 16 calories per 100ml, so it's purely about how thirsty the table is.
Why is the alcohol-free red wine range so small?
Because red is the hardest wine to make well without alcohol, in my view, and because I'm fussy. Alcohol gives a red its warmth and weight, so when it comes out, plenty of reds end up thin. I'd rather stock five I like than twenty I don't. When a good new one turns up, it'll be on this page. In the meantime, a 6 bottle mix from the wine box gets 10% off.
