Kev's guide to alcohol-free wheat beer
Good questions
Why is wheat beer cloudy?
Because nobody filters it. A hefeweizen (hefe is German for yeast) is bottled with the yeast still in it, and wheat adds proteins that create a natural haze. That's where a lot of the body and the banana and clove flavour live. So cloudy isn't a fault, it's the whole point. If you want the full unfiltered experience, start with the Nirvana Bavarian Hefeweizen.
What does alcohol-free weissbier taste like?
Soft, bready and smooth, with banana and clove from the yeast and very little hop bitterness. Some lean sweeter, some spicier. Paulaner is fine malt with a hint of sweetness. Nirvana adds a little vanilla and bubblegum on the nose. If you find IPAs too bitter, this is the style that might win you over.
How do you pour a wheat beer properly?
Use a tall glass and rinse it with cold water first. Tilt it and pour slowly down the side until the bottle is about four fifths empty. Then give the bottle a gentle swirl to lift the yeast off the bottom and pour the rest straight in for that big fluffy head. A 500ml bottle fits a traditional half-litre weizen glass perfectly. A pint glass works too. Nobody from Munich is checking.
What food goes with wheat beer?
Wheat beer is brilliant with food because it's soft rather than bitter. Pretzels and sausages are the Bavarian classic. It's also great with white fish, salads, goat's cheese, a Sunday brunch and anything with a bit of spice, like a Thai green curry. The fruitier ones, like Kaiserdom Pink Grapefruit, work nicely with grilled chicken or a barbecue.
Is there a 0.0% wheat beer?
Yes, several. Paulaner Weissbier comes in a 0.0% bottle and can, and Kaiserdom Pink Grapefruit, Goxoa Lemon and Goxoa Cherry are all 0.0% too. 0.0% means no alcohol at all. In the UK, anything at 0.5% or under counts as alcohol free. We show the exact ABV on every drink. For the full 0.0% range across beer, wine and spirits, see our zero collection.
What's the difference between hefeweizen, weissbier and witbier?
Hefeweizen and weissbier are basically the same Bavarian style. Weizen means wheat, weiss means white and hefe means yeast, so a hefeweissbier is a cloudy one with the yeast left in. Witbier is the Belgian cousin, usually spiced with coriander and orange peel, so it's more citrusy and less banana. Everything in this collection is Bavarian in style, apart from the fruit and lemon twists.
