Kev's guide to alcohol-free stout and porter

Dark by half five. The heating's on, and someone in the house has already argued it's too early for the heating. This is stout season. Alcohol-free stout, specifically, because you've got things to do tomorrow. Even if that thing is just finding the other glove.

It's a small range. That's on purpose. Dark beer is hard to get right without alcohol. So we only stock the ones that pull it off.

How to choose

  • Classic roasty stout: coffee, dark chocolate, creamy head. The Sunday afternoon by the fire one.
  • Milk stout: silkier and creamier, with coffee bitterness wrapped in something smooth.
  • Pastry stout: dessert in a can. Chocolate, cherry, the works. Not one for the wellness influencers. Good.
  • Coffee porter: for people who think a flat white needs more malt.
  • Hoppy stout: roast underneath, citrus and pine on top. Sounds wrong. Isn't.

Is there a good alcohol-free stout?

Yes, and they've come a long way. The good ones lean on serious malt: Ilkley's Nowt Mary uses chocolate malt, and Nirvana Dark & Smooth brings roasted barley and cocoa. Jump Ship Stokers was named the best no-alcohol beer in Scotland in 2024, and Mash Gang's Lesser Evil grew out of one of the most awarded alcohol-free stouts around. We keep the range small and only stock ones we rate.

What's the difference between a stout and a porter?

They're close cousins and brewers argue about it more than drinkers do. Roughly, stout leans darker and roastier, with coffee and dark chocolate, while porter tends to be a bit softer and more chocolatey. In our range, Nirvana Mocha Porter is brewed with coffee from Climpson & Sons. Try one of each and decide for yourself.

What is a pastry stout?

A pastry stout is a dessert-inspired stout, brewed to taste like cake, biscuits or puddings. Think chocolate, vanilla, fruit and a fuller, sweeter body than a dry stout. Mash Gang Lesser Evil is our chocolate and cherry one, best described as cake in a glass. Brilliant after dinner, or instead of pudding if you're being sensible.

Are alcohol-free stouts gluten free?

Some are. In our range, Nirvana Dark & Smooth and Jump Ship Stokers are both listed as gluten free and vegan. Others are listed as vegan only. Every product page shows the dietary details we get from the brewery, so check the drink you fancy. If you have coeliac disease or a serious allergy, always read the label and check with the brewer too.
