Let me tell you about the most dangerous drink in Britain. It's not a jager bomb. It's not tequila. It's the Tuesday night glass of wine.
It sneaks up on you. “Just one while I cook.” Then one with tea. Then the bottle's open and it'd be rude not to. Suddenly it's Wednesday and you've got the energy of a damp sock.
Been there
I was a big wine drinker. Not a disaster, just a bottle here, a bottle there, and Saturday mornings so foggy you'd need a lighthouse to find the kettle.
I swapped wine for kombucha. Cut down first, then cut it out. Yes, I'm now a man who gets excited about fermented tea. My younger self would be appalled. But I've got a lot more energy, and I'm 46 with an 8-year-old I want to keep up with in my 70s. I need every drop.
The habit is the thing
Twenty years in public health taught me this: the weeknight drink isn't a craving. It's a habit. Same time, same glass, same dent in the sofa.
You don't break a habit with willpower. You swap it. Keep the time, the glass and the dent. Change what's in the glass.
The swap list
The “just one while I cook” glass
A Pierre Zéro Merlot 20cl. One glass of 0.0% French red. No open bottle on the side giving you the eyes like the Terminator.
The can in front of the telly
Northern Monk Faith. Silky hazy pale from Leeds, 26 calories. A digestive has more. I'm not saying swap biscuits for beer. I'm just saying.
The “I deserve this” G&T
Pearsons London Botanic, Mediterranean tonic, loads of ice, cucumber. You do deserve this. You also deserve a Wednesday.
The “can't be bothered” cocktail
A Savyll Moscow Mule. Crack, pour, ice. A proper drink in four seconds flat.
Start with two
Don't go dry seven nights a week from Monday. That's how you end up face-first in a family bag of crisps. Pick two nights. Monday and Tuesday. Nothing ever happens on a Monday.
Wednesday, reimagined
You wake up before the alarm. No paracetamol. You're nice to people. It's like Groundhog Day, except Bill Murray gets it right first go.
Careful, though. Too many good Wednesdays and you'll start running. Then it's five-hour runs every Sunday. Swapped hangovers for hamstrings. Still out the game.
The deal bit
Mix any 6 drinks and get 5% off, up to 15% for 24. More swaps in our weeknight swap guide. Tuesday tastes better with no Wednesday. You'll see.
The serious bit
The NHS advises several drink-free days a week if you drink, and no more than 14 units a week. If you're worried about your drinking, your GP is a great first call.
