Food and drink pairing isn't just for posh restaurants where the waiter says “notes of leather and regret”. Get it right at a barbecue and everything tastes better.
I'm no sommelier. I'm a public health bloke who sells beer and gets excited about fermented tea. But I do know what goes with a burger.
Burgers: a hoppy IPA
A big, juicy burger needs a beer with attitude. Williams Bros Joker AF has mango, pineapple, citrus and pine with a bittersweet bite. Brilliant with a lamb burger. Why so serious? Because it's a burger, that's why.
Grilled fish: a light golden ale
Fish needs something clean that won't drown it. Athletic Upside Dawn has earthy hops and bright citrus, and it's lovely with grilled fish.
Fish tacos: a fruity gose
Tart and salty goes brilliantly with lime, chilli and seafood. Brulo Five Fruit brings mango, passionfruit and a pinch of sea salt. Fish tacos or ceviche. Fancy.
Spicy chicken: a juicy NEIPA
Heat loves fruit. The Cosmic Turtle, with mango and passionfruit, cools things down nicely. 44 calories, so you can have another chicken wing. You were going to anyway.
Sausages and halloumi: a crisp pils
Forgot To Take My Pils has a clean, biscuity base and bright citrus that cuts through anything salty or greasy. Which, at a British barbecue, is everything.
Steak: a red
Yes, red wine at a barbecue. A Pierre Zéro Merlot 20cl is one glass of 0.0% French Merlot. Great with a steak, and you can still drive the in-laws home. Whether you want to is another matter.
Strawberries: pink fizz
Noughty Sparkling Rosé is organic, 0.0% and lovely with strawberries. Wimbledon vibes, without the queue.
And for the runner?
Whatever's left after he's done his five-hour run. Which, judging by the time he gets there, is the coleslaw. Swapped hangovers for hamstrings. Still out the game.
The deal bit
Mix any 6 drinks and get 5% off, up to 15% for 24. Wine gets 10% off 6 bottles. More in our BBQ and garden guide.
The serious bit
Every drink shows its exact ABV, and 0.0% means zero. Keep water on the table on hot days. If you're worried about your drinking, your GP is a great first call.
