Kev's guide

Kev's guide to gifts for someone cutting down

Buying for someone who's drinking less is a bit like buying for a friend who's just taken up the guitar. You want to say you're behind them, without turning up with a chord book and a lecture. These are gifts for someone cutting down on alcohol, or for someone who doesn't drink at all, that just say "I thought you'd like these."

You don't need to know why they're cutting down, and you definitely don't need to ask. Balance looks different for everyone. After ten years in public health and twenty-odd in marketing, here's what I've got: the best gift is about what they enjoy, not what they're giving up.

How to choose

  • Match what they like now. Lager person, lager box. Stout person, stout box. Easy.
  • Not sure? Go mixed. Six different drinks feels like a tasting, not a test.
  • Look for a story. A box from a local brewery, or a brewery with a reason behind it, feels chosen rather than grabbed on the way past.

Kev's picks

  • Nirvana Gift Set: six 330ml bottles, two each of Bavarian Helles lager, IPA and Dark & Smooth stout. Becky Taylor-Kean started Nirvana after her dad stopped drinking, so he could still feel part of the round. Hard to beat as a reason for a gift.
  • Jump Ship Gift Set: six 440ml cans of lager, IPA and stout from Scotland's first alcohol-free brewery. All 0.5%, vegan, and every batch tested gluten free to under 10ppm.
  • Yorkshire Gift Box: six 330ml bottles of Yorkshire-brewed lager, IPA, pale ale and stout, from the likes of Cold Bath, Ilkley Brewery and Smashed. God's Own County, in a box.
  • Mixed Mocktail Bundle: six 200ml cocktail cans for the friend who was never a beer person. Chill, crack, pour over ice.

Good questions

Is it rude to give alcohol-free drinks to someone who still drinks?

Not if it's a gift and not a hint. Plenty of people who drink keep a few alcohol-free beers in for a school night. Pick something on taste, like a box of their favourite style, and hand it over as you would any other beer or wine. Skip the card that says "thought this might help". That's the bit that makes it awkward, not the drink.

What's a good secret Santa gift for someone who doesn't drink?

Something they can open, share and enjoy without thinking too hard. A six of mixed cans works well, because it's a treat rather than a statement. The mocktail bundle suits the cocktail crowd, and the fruit beer bundle suits anyone who likes their drinks bright and fruity. Check the price against your office budget before you get carried away.

How do I give an alcohol-free gift without it feeling like a comment?

Make it about them, not about drinking. Choose a style you know they enjoy, a brewery from somewhere they love, or a box with a good story behind it. Give it the same way you'd give anything else. If they've mentioned cutting down, a simple "saw these and thought of you" is plenty. Nobody needs a speech with their stout.

Are the mixed bundles the same every time?

Not always. Our own mixed lager, stout, fruit beer, mocktail and cider bundles are chosen from our range and we change the line-up as new drinks arrive, so they stay fresh. The Jump Ship set is a mix of lager, IPA and stout that varies with stock. The Nirvana set is fixed: two lagers, two IPAs and two stouts.

What if they don't really like beer?

Plenty of options. The mocktail bundle is six ready-to-drink cocktail cans. The cider bundle is picked to cover fresh and fruity, floral and properly dry. For wine or gin drinkers, browse wine and spirits and build your own: any 6 bottles get 10% off.

Is a gift set a good idea for someone doing Sober October or Dry January?

It can be, if it's offered as support and not as a dare. A month off is easier with something nice in the fridge for Friday. A mixed box gives them a few to try and work out what they like. Keep it low-key and let them lead. Our Sober October and Dry January pages have more ideas.
